ICMR appoints Munir as chairman
KUALA LUMPUR: The Institute for Capital Market Research Malaysia (ICMR) has appointed Tan Sri Dr Mohd Munir Abdul Majid as the chairman of ICMR’s board of directors, effective Nov 6, 2019.
The ICMR is an initiative by the Securities Commission Malaysia, funded by the Capital Market Development Fund (CMDF) to act as an independent think-tank that aims to promote sustainable development of the Malaysian capital market through providing focused and pragmatic research that can be tapped by industry, policy makers and regulators.
“We are delighted to welcome Tan Sri Munir to ICMR in this new capacity.
“His deep knowledge of both local and regional economic affairs, wide-ranging experience in leading research institutions, and strong Aseanlevel networks would further strengthen our institute’s capabilities at a crucial time, given the need for Malaysia’s capital market to improve its competitiveness and functioning to navigate the complexities of the evolving global landscape,” said Datin Azleen Osman Rani, director of the ICMR.
Dr Munir started his illustrious career in 1978 as a leader writer for The New Straits Times Press, and progressed to become its group editor.
He left NST in 1986 to become CEO of Pertanian Baring Sanwa (PBS), whose name he changed to Commerce International Merchant Bankers (CIMB), which later transformed into one of Malaysia’s leading merchant banks.
He was invited by the Government of Malaysia to establish and become the first and founding executive chairman of the Securities Commission in 1993, where he served for two terms until 1999.
