A reading project at two schools in Kudat
KUDAT: Fifteen students from UiTM English Book Club recently organised a reading project in two primary schools in Kudat – SK Panudahan and SRK Tinangol.
The programme, dubbed English Pecha Kucha Go and supervised by Dr Jocelyn Yee Vun Lee, saw them travelling first along a bumpy, hilly gravel road to SK Panudahan which is 16.7 km from Kudat Town.
The programme did not run as smoothly as planned due to the lack of basic amenities. There was no electricity when the programme started which made the Pecha Kucha storytelling slightly chaotic.
The students were divided into seven groups with each led by two UiTM Book Club members whose roles were teachers.
The group activities began with the teachers reading the story, “Puss in Boots” aloud. Then, the session continued with readers theatre. After recess, the sessions continued another reading aloud session where the students were given a choice to choose a story, Rumpelstiltskin or King Midas and then, followed by another readers theatre session.
Before the storytelling, students learned the vocabularies they would come across.
At the end of the storytelling, questions would be posed to test their understanding.
Meanwhile, the readers theatre session was done in order to consolidate reading fluency as well as to boost their confidence and give them the feeling that learning the English language can be fun.
SK Panudahan Year 6 students were eager to learn. Even though some of them could not utter a word in English in the beginning, they did their best to participate.
Then at SRK Tinangol, the students were enthused by the storytelling sessions.
All the seven groups showcased their readers theatre, including the ones who appeared to be reserved and shy, went on the stage and performed.
