Sabah duo take on top bowlers

Muhammad Hafiz Firdaus Affendy and Dayangku Haslyn Suraya Awg Husin will carry Sabah’s challenge in the Champion of Champions Lawn Bowls Tournament.

KOTA KINABALU: Muhammad Hafiz Firdaus Affendy and Dayangku Haslyn Suraya Awg Husin will carry Sabah's challenge in the Champion of Champions Lawn Bowls Tournament in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur from February 13 to 16.

Hafiz and Haslyn, who are also Sabah's Malaysia Games (Sukma) athletes, got the nod after winning in the Selection Tournament organised by Sabah Lawn Bowls Associatio­n (Bowls Sabah) in Likas over the weekend.

In the Men's Singles category, Hafiz was up against Lawrence Eging in the final where he did not disappoint.

The 19-year-old claimed a comfortabl­e 21-14 victory to earn his place in the national level Champion of Champions tournament.

Ahmad Abbas and Firdaus Sulaiman settled for third and fourth placing.

As for Haslyn, the 20-year-old defeated fellow Papar bowler Norcahaya Zakaria 20-13 in the Women's Singles final.

Nur Fatin Aqilah Amran and Rujinah Ajok clinched the third and fourth placing.

A total of 17 men and eight women bowlers competed in the Selection Tournament, where only the men's and women's winners will represent Sabah in the national tournament.

Bowls Sabah president Datuk Ladislaus Maluda hoped that both the state representa­tives would give their utmost best when competing in the national tournament, which is expected to feature some of the country's top bowlers.
