Slamptea donates RM344,630 to Tolumis Home
KOTA KINABALU: Tolumis Home will soon be able to accommodate more residents with special needs, thanks to Sabah Labuan Motion Picture Traders and Entertainment Association (Slamptea) for funding the home’s expansion and refurbishment project.
Slamptea president Peter Chow said the association and Junior Chamber International (JCI) Kota Kinabalu have jointly organized the Down Memory Lane Charity Dinner in 2014, which raised more than RM500,000 to build a new building for Tolumis Home.
“The funds raised was initially sufficient to build a new building but with the economic slowdown and rising cost of building materials, the project now costs RM1 million.
“We had no choice but to change the plan to expanding and refurbishing the existing premises,” he explained to the media at the handing over of donation to Tolumis Home here yesterday.
He said the expansion project, which has reached 80 percent completion, cost about RM200,000.
“The remaining funds of the sum RM344,630, is donated to Tolumis Home for its operational expenses.”
Once the expansion is completed, Chow said the home would be able to accommodate 60 disabled persons (OKU) compared to about 40 to 50 previously.
“We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the sponsors who have supported our charity work.
“We also hope that the public will come forward to support Tolumis Home and lend a helping hand to the people in need.”
Tolumis Home, which cares for OKU without families, currently has 11 residents.
The home was established 23 years ago in Penampang and relocated to its present address at Kampung Dungang, Tuaran in 2013.
Also present were Slamptea deputy president John Soon, treasurer Henry Fung, secretary Chester Pang, Tolumis Home founder Ching Mee, and Jeff Lu, who was then the chairman of JCI Area Sabah in 2014.
