Kimanis sees highest voter turnout for by-election since GE14

-

BEAUFORT: The Kimanis by-election yesterday saw the highest turnout for by-elections since the 14th general election (GE14) held in May 2018.

It was the 10th by-election since GE14.

The Election Commission (EC) had targeted 70 per cent but the turnout was 79.92 per cent.

“The turnout surpassed the 79.31 per cent recorded for the Rantau by-election (held in April last year),” EC chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun told Bernama TV in a cross over from Dewan Datuk Seri

Panglima Haji Mohd Dun Banir where the vote-tallying took place, last night.

In yesterday’s by-election, Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Datuk Mohamad Alamin, 48, defeated Datuk Karim Bujang, 67, from Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan), by a majority of 2029 votes.

The by-election was necessitated by the Election Court’s nullification on August 16, 2019, of former MP Datuk Seri Anifah Aman’s win in Kimanis in the 14th General Election in May 2018.

The first by-election, for

Sg Kandis in Selangor on August 4, 2018, saw a turnout of 49.8 per cent followed by Balakong, Selangor (September 8, 2018 - 43%); Seri Setia, Selangor (September 8, 2018 - 44%); Semenyih, Selangor (March 2, 2019 - 73.24%) Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan (October 13, 2018 - 58.20% ); Cameron Highlands, Pahang (January 26, 2019- 68.8%): Rantau, Negeri Sembilan (April 13, 2019 - 79.31%) Sandakan, Sabah (May 11, 2019-72%); Tanjung Piai, Johor (November 16, 2019 -74.43%). - Bernama
