Complaints over garbage in Tawau

-

TAWAU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Tawau Public Complaints Bureau has received complaints about overturned rubbish bins at the backlane of Valentino Salon at Fajar commercial centre and near Marco Polo Hotel.

The bureau chief, Sarah Chang, said the overturned bins had caused wastewater to pool and corrode the road.

She said the complainants claimed that past Tawau Municipal Council presidents had attempted to address the issue but the problem had persisted.

Chang said the relevant department should conduct a thorough study to identify and solve the cause of the problem once and for all.

She said the municipal council had previously sealed the refuse chute at Sabindo and placed rubbish bins at the back lanes.

However, she said the rubbish bins had taken up the parking spaces and drivers were prone to accidentally scratch their vehicles as their cars came into contact with the bins.

Chang added that residents living on the upper floors have resorted to throwing their garbage right from their homes onto the back lane and pedestrian walkway because they were too lazy to carry their wastes down to the ground floor.

“The municipal council eventually reopened the rubbish chute but that did not solve the hygiene problem.

“There is still a lot of garbage on the ground, which gives rise to serious cleanliness and hygiene issues.

“It shows that the local government lacked proper study and planning in handling such matter.”

Hence, Chang urged the municipal council to study the measures taken in other towns and city in maintaining cleanliness before making rash decisions.

She said the council should also engage business operators and residents in a dialogue to get them to cooperate before carrying out enforcement on offenders.

She also urged the public to contact the bureau hotline 014-3991900 to file a complaint.
