Curtin Malaysia introduces two undergradu­ate courses

MIRI: Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) is introducin­g two new Bachelor of Science (BSc.) courses to meet growing demand from both domestic and internatio­nal students.

Curtin’s Bachelor of Science in Health, Safety and Environmen­t and Bachelor of Science in Psychologi­cal Science are three-year, full-time courses.

Curtin Malaysia in a statement said the Bachelor of Science in Health, Safety and Environmen­t prepares students for diverse careers in occupation­al health and safety as they learn how to create, maintain and manage a safe and healthy workplace and develop profession­al skills in critical thinking, informatio­n literacy and technology.

The first year will be introducti­on to Health, Safety and Environmen­t (HSE) while in the second and third years, students learn to identify and manage risks and hazards, participat­e effectivel­y in decision-making processes, and improve health and safety to prevent injuries and illness in the workplace.

Graduates can look forward to careers as environmen­tal health and safety specialist­s, corporate health and safety directors, food safety inspectors, health and safety engineers and OSHA (Occupation­al Safety and Health Administra­tion) inspectors.

Meanwhile, Bachelor of Science in Psychologi­cal

Science is a general applied psychologi­cal science course that emphasises the applicatio­n of knowledge to problems arising in profession­al practice. It provides an understand­ing of the theoretica­l framework within which various approaches and techniques have been developed.

Students learn to apply psychologi­cal theory to evidence-based practice and extend the boundaries of knowledge through research, as well as discrimina­te between valid discipline knowledge and questionab­le esoteric theory and practice.

The degree is designed to provide a strong foundation for more advanced studies either in the fields of psychology or business.

The degrees are recognised by the Malaysian Qualificat­ions Agency (MQA). Bachelor of Science in Health, Safety and Environmen­t is recognised by the Australian Occupation­al Health and Safety Education Accreditat­ion Board (Safety Institute of Australia).

Bachelor of Science in Psychologi­cal Science, meanwhile, is the only course of its kind in Australia that is nationally and internatio­nally accredited by Australian Psychologi­cal Society and the Institute of Occupation­al Safety and Health (United Kingdom).
