Man held for possessing 42 boxes of contraband cigarettes

SIPITANG: Police arrested a local man found to have 42 boxes of cigarettes in his possession at Kampung Padang Berempah here on Monday.

Sipitang police chief, DSP Champin Piuh said the arrest was made when patrol police spotted a suspicious man in a white van near the area around 11am.

He said upon investigation, police found 42 boxes containing numerous brands of cigarettes that were believed imported but without paying any taxes.

The 44-year-old suspect and the seized items were taken to the police station for further investigation, he said.

Champin said the case would be investigated under Section 135 (1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967.

The 42 boxes containing imported cigarettes that were confiscated from the suspect.
