Call for more proactive efforts to combat cyber crimes

KUCHING: Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Women chief Kho Teck Wan calls for the authorities and law enforcers to take more proactive efforts to increase awareness on combating cyber crimes.

“As more businesses and social activities shifted online due to Covid-19 pandemic, we will see the rise of not only sexual harassment, but cyber bullying, scams, spreading of fake news and hacking activities. Although police reports were lodged and we had seen some actions and resolution from the authority, more awareness and proactive efforts are needed by the authorities to monitor cybercrime,” she said in a statement yesterday.

She gave examples of some elected representatives and political figures in the peninsula who were victims of cyber stalking and sexual harassment recently.

Such crimes committed by ‘cowards behind fake accounts’ through digital devices should be punished harshly, she opined.

“Crime committed online is still a crime and I call upon all corners of society to help us combat cyber-crime by paying attention to such activities online and report the crime to the authorities immediately,” she said.

Kho also advised the public to lodge reports of inappropriate online content to Communications and Multimedia Forum of Malaysia at http://www.cmcf.my or via email at secretariat@cmcf.my while fake news can be reported to https://sebenarnya.my

“If you had lodged an online complaint and are not satisfied with the investigation or do not receive any feedback, you can lodge a report to Malaysia Communications and Multimedia Commission via email at aduanskmm@mcmc. gov.my or through http:// aduan.skmm.gov.my,”she said.
