Hillside erosion at Taman Grandview Sandakan being looked into

-

Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong together with the Head of the Sandakan Municipal Council (SMC) Highway & Public Utilities Committee (HPUC) Taren Sunil Manoharan and member Chia Chee On recently made a site inspection at Taman Grandview following complaints by house owners that the hill slope behind their terrace houses is very prone to erosion.

The erosion has been giving them problems for quite some time.

“Together with YB Calvin and his officers as well as members of the Taman Grandview Management Committee and the affected house owners, we made a thorough inspection of the area concerned and found their complaint to be justified,” said

Taren Sunil.

The team found the hill slope to be very steep and very close to the back of a row of terrace houses.

“The soil composition of the hill slope is also of the type that is very susceptible to erosion especially when it rains,” noted Taren Sunil.

Calvin and his team made their way up the hill slope to check out the situation.

He then promised to find a way to solve the long-standing problem.

It is believed that the land behind the terrace houses is privately owned by different individuals and as such no action could be taken without informing them or getting their consent.

“Calvin has asked the HPUC to help look into the required details regarding the ownership of the land so that discussions can be initiated with the owners. Meanwhile, Calvin will also seek the help and advice of the Public Works Department (JKR) on technical issues to solve the erosion,” said Taren Sunil.

He added that once the report from JKR had been received, MPS and the HPUC would coordinate with Calvin’s office as well as JKR to find a solution to the problem as quickly as possible.

Taren Sunil again expressed hope that more housing estate management committees and individuals would come forward with information for their elected representatives or HPUC to act on matters of public concern.
