Sabah to send only men’s team to Razak Cup

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah will be making a comeback in the Razak Cup after a four-year hiatus from the country’s premier hockey tournament.

The Razak Cup will be taking place at the National Hockey Stadium in Bukit Jalil from September 18-26.

In revealing this yesterday, Sabah Hockey Associatio­n (SHA) president Datuk Seri Dr Anil Jeet Singh however said Sabah would only be sending the men’s team to the tournament.

“For this year’s edition of the tournament, we have decided to send only the men’s team... may be we will contest in the men’s and women’s categories next year.

“That said, we are glad to make a return to the competitio­n...it is our first appearance in five years having last contested in 2015.

“It will be an opportunit­y for our players to show their talents and compete against the country’s best players or teams,” Anil, who also heads the Malaysia Hockey Confederat­ion (MHC) Competitio­n Committee, said.

For the record, the Razak Cup is the first hockey competitio­n taking place since the enforcemen­t of the Movement Control Order (MCO).

And Anil said the government had given Malaysia Hockey Confederat­ion (MHC) the green light to stage the tournament, although he reminded teams to face any eventualit­y should there was any surge in the number of Covid-19 cases.

Meanwhile, the Razak Cup this year which will be based on a single-division format has attracted 15 men’s and 11 women’s teams.

The teams are Armed Forces, Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Police, Perak, Perlis, Penang, Sabah, Selangor and Terengganu for the men’s category.

As for the women, the teams are Armed Forces, Kedah, Kuala Lumpur, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Police, Penang, Perak, Sarawak, Selangor and Terengganu.

The top three winning teams will receive RM10,000, RM7,000 and RM5,000 for men and RM5,000, RM3,000 and RM2,000 for women.
