Call for re-evaluation of housing allowance for civil servants
KOTA KINABALU: Sabah Kadazandusun Murut Welfare and Education Association (Pekadin) is calling for the reevaluation of the Regional Housing Allowance for civil servants including teachers in Sabah, Sarawak and West Malaysia.
Pekadin’s vice president, Simon Molubi said that the association opines that a re-evaluation must be carried out since there are huge disparities in the allowance enjoyed by civil servants in the three regions.
He said that the streamlining of the allowance is in line with the spirit of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 to recognize the status of Sabah and Sarawak on par with west Malaysia.
According to earlier media reports, the Regional Housing Allowance received by grade G44 teachers from West Malaysia is between RM730 and RM830; while teachers of the same grade in Sabah and Sarawak receive between RM200 and RM550.
He said that Pekadin feels that the time has arrived to study the matter again.
Simon said that he hoped the upcoming Budget 2021 will take into consideration the issue.
