WFM to hold bi-monthly internal meet to keep exponents sharp and ready

-

KUALA LUMPUR: The Wushu Federation of Malaysia (WFM) will continue to hold internal tests for their exponents every two months to keep the national athletes in tip-top shape ahead of next year’s SEA Games.

WFM president Datuk Chong Kim Fatt said the bi-monthly internal competitions, which began last month, would be used to test the exponents’ fitness, performance and preparedness since all forms of championships have been postponed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The internal competition will involve the 19 national exponents -- 15 seniors and four back-up athletes -- currently undergoing training via quarantinebased approach at the Bukit Jalil National Sports Council (NSC) following the implementation of the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur.

“It will involve all national exponents in the NSC as we want them to remain competitive while, at the same time, maintain their performances and not become complacent. We will get world-class coaches and jury members to judge their performances.

“After every test, the exponents will be told of ways to correct and enhance their techniques,” he said when contacted by Bernama.

Chong also said that although WFM had been given the green light by NSC to host a closed championship in Bukit Jalil in December, they were still considering the matter following the spike in new Covid-19 cases in Malaysia of late.

“We will decide based on the current situation regarding the hosting of the closed championship. We need a championship within the country as there will be no international competitions until June next year now that the Asian Wushu Championship in India, which was scheduled to be held in March 2021, is likely to be postponed,” he said.
