KKCCCI cancels CNY celebration
KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) has cancelled its annual Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration this year which is traditionally held on the seventh day of the Lunar New Year due to the Covid-19 pandemic and Movement Control Order (MCO).
Its president, Datuk Michael Lui, expressed his apologies and hoped that members would understand the reason for the cancellation.
“The Covid-19 pandemic is getting more serious with large number of new cases reported everyday, which had even exceeded 3,000 daily new cases.
“With the implementation of the MCO 2.0, the KKCCCI committee has decided to cancel the Chinese New Year celebration this year for the safety of our members.”
Lui said all signs were showing that the Covid-19 pandemic in Malaysia was not improving, which prompted the government to roll out different categories of movement restriction order nationwide.
As a result, he said schools and businesses were disrupted, employees were facing the possibility of being laid off while the economy also took a heavy hit.
Covid-19 patients, on the other hand, are faced with the fear of not being able to recover from the virus, he said.
“Battling against Covid-19 require everyone to practise selfdiscipline.
“By taking precautions, we protect our family against Covid19.”
Lui once again urged the public to comply with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) and stay at home to contain the spread of the virus.
