KOTA KINABALU: A study is being carried out by the State Works Department as it gears itself up for the setting up of a water commission, said Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin.
The study is a comprehensive one which includes the legal aspect and is being done on all levels, including at the local authorities, he said.
The Works Minister who was asked for an update with regards to the setting up of a water commission said that the State Cabinet has been informed and once the detailed study is completed, it will be tabled at the State Assembly.
Bung was speaking to reporters during a visit to the Karambunai state constituency on Sunday. Also present was Science, Technology and Innovation Minister cum Karambunai assemblyman Datuk Yakub Khan
He said he noticed that the roads in Karambunai have not been maintained and there is also the problem of blocked drains.
"Other issues the people face are squatter colonies as well as water and electricity theft. The government will try to resolve all these issues as soon as it can," he said.
He also spoke about the water shortage problem faced by folks in Bandar Sierra adding that the developer did not provide sufficient water storage to meet the requirement of residents there.
"There is water supply but not enough storage facilities. We have asked Datuk Yakub to speak to City Hall and try to resolve the problem," said Bung.
Bung also wants City Hall to discuss with the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) about the condition of drains in the villages in Karambunai which are often flooded after one to two hours of heavy rainfall.
On the issue of roads, he said the Public Works Department (PWD) will be sending a team to the area and look at the proposal on road maintenance forwarded to them.
"I want all relevant authorities to be proactive in resolving issues affecting the rakyat, not only here but throughout the state," he stressed.
