Traffic offenders in Selangor can plead guilty online

-

PUTRAJAYA: Motorists with traffic summonses issued in Shah Alam or Selangor need not have to appear physically in court to make their guilty plea as it can be done through long distance communication technology, effective February 2.

This followed the launch of the online guilty plea system for traffic offences or e-PG System, according to a statement from the Office of the Federal Court Chief Registrar.

It said the e-PG System will be applied by the Shah Alam Magistrate Court in Selangor for all traffic cases registered in the Shah Alam Magistrate Court 3 beginning February 2 to 5, 2021.

Attached with the statement is a list of 43 offences that are allowed for motorists concerned to use the e-PG System, which include ignoring traffic instructions and signals, with no valid driving licence and registration number.

However, those who are issued summonses for speeding cannot use the application and must physically appear in court, it said. Those with cases registered at the Magistrate’s Court concerned can browse the e-PG system at https://ecourt.kehakiman.gov.my effective February 2.

Citing statistics, it said, more than one million cases of traffic summons registered at the Magistrate’s Court mostly ended with the errant motorists making a guilty plea and then fined.

Therefore, digitalising the guilty plea process in traffic cases can help speed up the disposal of the cases, it said, adding that with Covid-19 still plaguing the country, the e-PG system can reduce the need for traffic offenders to appear in Court and also save time, money and security as well as. health.

It said the judiciary hoped to fully launch the e-PG system in Magistrates Courts throughout the peninsula by April 1 and in June for the Magistrate’s Court in Sabah and Sarawak.

The Judiciary also hoped that ePG system will further strengthen the administration of justice and expand access to justice for all parties.
