2,253 new cases, 11 more deaths – DG

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia reported 2,253 new Covid-19 cases and 11 fatalities in the last 24 hours.

Health director-general Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah with the latest figures, the country’s Covid-19 case tally now stands at 295,951, of which 27,994 are active cases.

Of the new cases, 2,246 were local transmissi­ons involving 1,324 Malaysians and 922 foreigners, while seven were imported involving three Malaysians and four foreign nationals, he added.

“There were also 3,085 recovery cases reported,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Dr Noor Hisham said Selangor recorded the highest number of new cases with 633 infections, followed by Perak (545), Johor (276), Sarawak (250) and Sabah with 129 cases.

Dr Noor Hisham said the 11 deaths reported yesterday involved eight involved Malaysians and three foreigners aged between 36 to 78, with four fatalities recorded in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur (three), Sarawak (two) and one case each in Johor and Sabah.

He said 95 of the new cases involved prison clusters, namely Tembok Tapah with 54 cases, Tembok Pengkalan Chepa (28 cases), Telok Mas ( six cases), Penjara Jalan Sungai Jelok (three cases), Tembok Sungai Udang (two cases) and one case each involving the Penjara Seberang Perai and Tembok Bukit Besi clusters.

He said a total of 10 new clusters were identified yesterday, with eight of them workplace-related while two more involved communitie­s in Kampung Telekong in Kelantan and Kampung Columbia in Perak.
