RM10k, RM50k fines unacceptable

KOTA KINABALU: The maximum fine of RM10,000 and RM50,000 for individuals and companies respectively that violate the Covid-19 standard operating procedures (SOPs) are unacceptable, said Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) president Datuk Michael Lui.

“I personally cannot accept this. The government should understand that the intention of fining offenders is to warn the public to comply with the SOPs.

“Ordinary citizens and business owners cannot possibly afford to pay the hefty fine.

“Besides, it is not the intention of business owners and some members of the public to deliberately violate the SOPs; they could be confused by the ambiguous rules and regulations!”

Lui said increasing the fine for repeat SOP offenders was justifiable, but the amount must be reasonable.

“We do understand the reason for fining offenders is to ensure the people comply with the SOPs.”

He expressed disappointment at the government's double standards.

“The government should do away with the double standards to regain the people's trust.”

He also urged the government to review the hefty fine and impose a reasonable amount.
