Foreigner jailed for having another person’s MyKad
KOTA KINABALU: An unemployed man was jailed for 16 months by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for possessing another person’s Malaysian identity card (MyKad).
Magistrate Lovely Natasha Charles imposed the sentence on Ibrahim Maruji, 46, after he admitted to having the MyKad under the name of one Stephen Radin @ Azmi bearing the numbers 680710-12-5169 without any authorization or reasonable explanation.
The accused was arrested for committing the offence under Regulation 25 (1)(o) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 at Inanam Town on February 18.
The indictment provides for a jail term of up to three years or a fine or both, upon conviction.
The facts of the case stated that the accused was apprehended during an operation conducted at the said place and during a check on his body, the MyKad was found kept inside his wallet.
Investigation revealed that the accused found the MyKad at the roadside at Inanam Town and took it for his own use.
In pleading for a lenient sentence, the unrepresented accused, who had no valid travel document, said that he has five kids and suffering from gout while in reply, the prosecution urged court to impose a deterrent sentence and requested for the accused be referred to the Immigration Department after completing his sentence.
The court ordered for the accused to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his jail term for further action.
