Daily cases remain in triple digits

KUCHING: Sarawak recorded two more Covid-19 deaths yesterday along with 171 new cases.

Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) in its daily update said the state’s the death toll was now at 83 while the cumulative number of infections rose to 9,545.

In a statement, the committee said the 82nd death involved a 78-yearold woman who was admitted into Bintulu Hospital after complainin­g of breathing difficulti­es.

“She was found positive for Covid-19 on Feb 16 and her health continued to deteriorat­e before she passed away on Feb 27.

“She had comorbidit­ies of high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney failure,” it said.

On the 83rd death, SDMC said it was related to the Pasai Cluster in Sibu and involved an 80-year-old man.

It said the case was admitted into Sibu Hospital after he was found positive for Covid-19 on Jan 29 during an active case detection exercise.

“His health continued to deteriorat­e and he passed away on Feb 27. The case had comorbidit­ies of high blood pressure, diabetes and prostate cancer,” it said.

On the breakdown of new cases, SDMC said the 33 recorded in Sibu was the highest among all districts in the state.

This was followed by Miri with 31 new cases, Bintulu (29), Kapit (20), Betong (20), Kuching (15), Serian (9), Kanowit (4), Beluru (2), Sri Aman (2), and one each in Bukit Mabong, Bau, Samarahan, Sebauh, Julau and Asajaya. SDMC also reported a total of 2,364 active cases being treated in hospitals across the state yesterday, namely in Sibu Hospital and quarantine and low-risk treatment centre (PKRC) (1,084), Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) and PKRC (374), Bintulu Hospital and PKRC (291), Kapit Hospital and PKRC (192), Sarikei Hospital and PKRC (188), Miri Hospital and PKRC (160), Betong Hospital and PKRC (40), and Sri Aman Hospital and PKRC (35).

On Covid-19 recoveries, the committee reported 203 patient discharges across the state of which 115 were from Sibu Hospital, 37 from SGH, 20 from Bintulu Hospital, 17 from Kapit PKRC, 10 from Miri Hospital and four from Sarikei Hospital.

This raised the cumulative number of Covid-19 recoveries in the state to 7,064 or 74.01 per cent of the total number of cases, it added.
