Sibu Central Market reopens today after almost a month of closure

-

SIBU: The Sibu Central Market reopens today after having been closed since Feb 8, announced Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Market and Petty Traders Standing Committee chairman Councillor Albert Tiang.

According to him, the popular market at Jalan Channel here was supposed to reopen on Feb 15, but the closure order was extended for another five days following an increase in the number of positive Covid-19 cases detected there.

Later, the closure order continued to be extended up until yesterday (Feb 28).

“Traders should be able to resume their operations (today) in view of the reopening of Sibu Central Market.

“However, the traders are expected to take turns in running their stalls on alternate-day basis.

“Usually, about 500 traders would operate in every alternate day, but many of them might be taking leave, so I reckon that the number (of traders operating today) to be around 400,” said Tiang.

For the record, Sibu Central Market houses more than 1,000 hawkers.

?? ?? According to Tiang, for now traders at Sibu Central Market would operate on alternate-day basis.
