Motorist, passenger slightly hurt after road collapses from under them

-

KAPIT: Two women were lucky to not to be seriously hurt after a section of the road they were travelling on collapsed early yesterday and left their car precariously balanced against the slope.

The pair, 46-year-old Pui Sing Dong and her passenger Debit Sullah, 32, was on their way to Kapit town when the incident befell them at KM4 Jalan Bukit Goram around 6am.

Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) Kapit chief Erwandy Tugor said his personnel arrived at the scene at 6.23am to render assistance to the two women, who both sustained minor injuries.

“They managed to exit the car on their own and climbed back up onto the road before contacting Bomba for help,” he told The Borneo Post.

Following the incident, which left only half the road passable to vehicles, personnel from the Public Works Department (JKR) and Kapit District Office visited the site of the collapse to inspect the situation.

Divisional engineer Bujang Kanang, who was among those at the scene, said all necessary signage has been put up to warn road users of the collapse.

He added that a JKR contractor had also been directed to carry out repair works.

The latest collapse is believed to be due to heavy rain shortly past midnight on Sunday washing away soil and rocks at the affected section.

Early last month, a motorcyclist was injured after riding his machine into a 50-metre gap at Jalan Melekun-Nanga Mujong here following a collapse in the wee hours.
