Achieving industry gold standards through relevant exposure

-

THE film industry evolves at a rapid pace and to have a good head start in the industry, one needs to have the relevant industry knowledge and exposure.

As such, Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (‘TAR UC’) ensures that its students in Broadcasting are well prepared for the demands of the film industry by making them industry-ready.

In view of this, the Faculty of Communication and Creative Industries (‘FCCI’) in TAR UC forged industry collaboration with HUG Pictures SdnBhd on 10 March 2020 to provide students with the necessary industry exposure and training to prepare them for the industry.

HUG Pictures is not only involved in film production but they also take a step further in developing their digital storytelling platform which focuses on environmental issues.

“We are looking at exposing TAR UC students in the many processes of our work such as in research, interviewing relevant parties, designing the marketing and promotional materials for the project and developing the online presence for the specific projects. What is more exciting is the involvement of TAR UC lecturers in our on-going projects,” said Mark Lee of this mutual cooperation.

TAR UC students are encouraged to organise activities which are related to their studies in order to gain handson experience and practical exposure. Having said that, the Bachelor of Communication (Hons) in Broadcasting and Bachelor of Communication (Hons) in Media Studies students worked together to hold TAR UC’s first ever online festival entitled, ‘Syok Film Festival’ from 22 – 24 April 2020.

The main objective of Syok Film Festival was to garner more support for the local film makers and to encourage more young Malaysians to take an interest in filmmaking.

The digital event featured many activities related to local film- making, such as having a podcast session with famed local film director Chiu Keng Guan, who had previously broken Malaysian box office records with his films Great Day, The Journey, Ola Bola, Think Big Big and Woohoo! There was also well-known local YouTuber Jared Lee who gave a short sharing session.

By organising activities related to filmmaking, students would be able to get to know more about the many aspects of the local filmmaking industry, which include working behind the cameras, production planning, post production, etc.

The quality of TAR UC programmes is demonstrated in the achievement of the alumni. Mickey Lai Loke Yee, a TAR UC Bachelor of Communication (Hons) in Broadcasting graduate, not only did the University College proud but also the country for directing a short film entitled, The Cloud Is Still There which recently won two awards, Best Performance Award in the SeaShorts Film 2020 Festival, an annual celebration of Southeast Asian Short Film and New Talent Award in the National Film Festival for Talented Youth, US.

Apart from these awards, Loke Yee’s film has also been officially selected to compete in the 25th Busan International Film Festival, one of the most significant film festivals in Asia and the Norwich Film Festival, UK.

“Studying the Diploma and Degree in Broadcasting at TAR UC had provided me with a strong foundation and sparked my interest in pursuing my dream of becoming a filmmaker. The practical teaching style has equipped me to always be prepared, from pre-production to post-production stages,” said Mickey.
