Virtual forum to explore business opportunities after pandemic
KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysia Maritime Silk Route Research Society, ASEAN-China Commerce Association, Malaysia-China Chamber of Commerce (MCCC) Sabah branch and Guangxi International Expositions Group Co. Ltd. are jointly organizing a virtual forum to explore business opportunities and economic trends after the Covid-19 pandemic.
The forum will be held on Zoom and broadcasted live on Facebook simultaneously on April 24, 2021 (Saturday), from 3pm to 5.30pm (GMT +8).
The event will kick off with an opening address by the Malaysia Maritime Silk Route Research Society president cum ASEANChina Commerce Association executive advisor, Prof Datuk Dr Wilson Yong Tung Yung.
The forum features speakers from Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, China and Singapore, including ASEAN-China Commerce Association chairman Darwin Yang, MCCC Sabah branch president Michael Chin Wee Yee, Guangxi International Expositions Group Co. Ltd. vice president Tang Hai and international financial strategist Dar Wong.
Yong said many businesses have been plunged into financial distress since the Covid-19 outbreak early last year.
He said young people faced the double whammy of losing their jobs and lack of employment prospects.
“The measures and financial aids introduced by governments across the globe are insufficient to rescue companies that are on the brink of closure.”
Hence, he said the Malaysia Maritime Silk Route Research Society and MCCC Sabah branch have decided to engage their counterparts from China, Thailand, Indonesia and Singapore to share their perspectives on the economic trends post-Covid-19, as well as explore win-win business opportunities.
Yong said the Malaysian government has approved two Covid-19 vaccines produced in China, namely Sinovac and CanSino.
He said the government has also announced that people were not allowed to choose the vaccine they wanted.
Under such circumstances, Yong urged the government to provide China’s Covid-19 vaccines for China nationals residing in Malaysia and Malaysian citizens who frequented China for business, tourism or study purposes.
“This will ease the application for China’s work, business and student visas for Malaysian citizens.”
In addition, he said doing so would facilitate international trade and economic growth, and more importantly, revive the economic slump in Malaysia through restoring and strengthening Malaysia-China trade cooperation and attracting more Chinese investors into our country.
“This will not only reinforce the win-win economic cooperation between Malaysia and China, but also benefit collaborations in the cultural, education, energy, policy development, environmental conservation arenas as well.”
Meanwhile, Chin hoped that the forum would deepen the spirit of shared future between Sabah, ASEAN and China, reinforce trade cooperation and elevate exchanges and collaboration among people in the region.
He also hoped that the Sabah Maju Jaya development plan launched by the State Government recently would complement investments from ASEAN and China to boost development in Sabah.
For instance, Chin said MCCC Sabah branch had a dialogue with the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) chief executive officer Datuk Rosmawati Lasuki recently to discuss bringing in exhibitors from ASEAN and China for major expositions.
The public are welcome to participate in the virtual forum. The link of the event will be sent to participants’ email. Those who wish to join please register at https://docs.google. com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScCa8_bn4YdPm9UWRD-UC4oBqWMMWr29bcbsBm7Ltz1RRnw/ viewform before 5pm, April 19, 2021.
