Man jailed for having fake currency notes

KOTA KINABALU: The Sessions Court here sentenced a man to five years’ jail for possessing 16 pieces of fake RM100 notes bearing the two serial numbers and used them to buy a cellphone last year.

Judge Azreena Aziz imposed the sentence on Mohd Hafiiz Badri Kadir, 29, after he pleaded guilty to having 14 pieces of RM100 bearing same serial number and another two pieces of RM100 notes bearing same serial number at an apartment in Penampang on October 20, 2020.

The accused was convicted under Section 489B of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to 20 years and a fine, upon conviction.

In mitigation, the unrepresen­ted accused prayed for a lenient sentence and the prosecutio­n urged court to impose a deterrent sentence against the accused as the offence committed was a serious one.
