Historical sites closed in India over spike in infections

NEW DELHI: Amid a spike in the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, India’s federal government announced yesterday that protected monuments, sites and museums under the control of the Archaeolog­ical Survey of India (ASI) will be closed until

May 15.

“Due to the prevailing Covid-19 situation, it has been decided to close all the centrally protected monuments, sites and museums under the ASI with immediate effect and till May 15, 2021, or until further orders,” reports

Xinhua news agency quoted the ASI in a statement.

India is witnessing a resurgence in Covid-19 cases.

The federal health ministry on Friday morning reported 217,353 new cases, the highest single-day spike, and 1,185 related deaths.

India’s junior culture and tourism minister Prahlad Singh Patel said the step to close down historical sites and museums was taken given the current wave of the epidemic.
