Sarawak records 508 new cases, one death
KUCHING: Sarawak yesterday recorded the highest number of Covid-19 cases in the country once more with 508 cases along with one death in Sibu, said the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC).
In its daily update, the committee said this brought the cumulative number of positive cases in the state to 23,940 and the death toll to 136, since the start of the pandemic.
Bintulu topped the list with 118 cases, followed by Sibu (107), Miri (67), Kuching (44), Selangau (33), Kanowit (25), Sarikei (18), Subis (17), Kapit (13), Sebauh (11), Belaga (7), Serian (6), Mukah (6), Meradong (6), Song (4), Pakan (3), Kabong (3), Beluru (3), Marudi (2), Sri Aman (2), Julau (2), Samarahan (2), Tatau (2), Bukit Mabong (2), Matu (1), Pusa (1), Asajaya (1), Betong (1) and Limbang (1).
The latest death involved a man aged 58 who had been referred to Sibu Hospital after being tested positive for Covid-19 at a health clinic, said SDMC.
“He had been showing symptoms of coughing before his condition deteriorated and he passed away on April 16. He had comorbidities such as high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidaemia, heart disease, chronic kidney disease and gout,” it said in a statement.
On the new cases yesterday, SDMC revealed that 65 individuals out of the 508 new cases had shown signs and symptoms of Covid-19 infection when screenings were conducted.
There were also 390 cases detected from individuals who were instructed to be quarantined at quarantine centres.
On the breakdown of cases, SDMC said 329 cases were from screenings of individuals with contact to positive cases; 79 cases from other screening at health facilities; 56 cases from screenings under active clusters; 39 cases from individuals with symptoms screenings at health facilities; and five cases were classified as Import B cases involving individuals returning from other states in Malaysia.
As for recoveries and discharged cases, SDMC said a total 295 had recovered today of which 80 were discharged from quarantine and low-risk treatment centre (PKRC) under Bintulu Hospital.
The rest are from PKRC under Sibu Hospital involving 71 recoveries, PKRC under Miri Hospital (47), Sarawak General Hospital Kuching (42), PKRC under Kapit Hospital (25), Sarikei Hospital (14), Sri Aman Hospital (11), PKRC Betong (3) and PKR Serian (1).
“The total number of recoveries in the state has now increased to 18,373 or 76.75 per cent out of the overall cases,” it said.
SDMC also said that 5,364 patients or active cases were still being isolated and treated at hospitals and PKRCs throughout the state.
A total of 696 new personunder-investigation (PUI) cases were also reported with 59 pending lab test results.
As of April 18, a total 7,159 individuals classified as personunder-surveillance (PUS) were quarantined in 97 quarantine centres throughout Sarawak including 680 who checked in yesterday.
