Dr M among Opposition MPs handing over memo to King over Emergency

PETALING JAYA: A group of people gathered at Istana Negara Tuesday (April 20) to request the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah end the state of emergency and allow Parliament to reconvene, The Star reported.

The King’s private secretary Colonel Datuk Nazim Mohd Alim received the memorandum from the group on behalf of the King.

Led by Opposition politician­s including former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad and other MPs, the group said that the state of emergency had affected the country’s economy, political stability as well as the investors’ confidence.

Among the MPs present were Khalid Samad, Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman, Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir, Mohamad Sabu, Teresa Kok, Hannah Yeoh, Fahmi Fadzil and Maria Chin.

Earlier, Shah Alam MP Khalid, as the head of the “Tamat Darurat” (End the State of Emergency) committee, read out the memorandum to the crowd in front of Istana Negara as police and security kept watch.

The memorandum also touched on the rising Covid-19 cases and the size of the Cabinet.

The group dispersed peacefully after the memorandum was handed over.
