KOTA KINABALU: The Public Works Department (PWD) has been urged to upgrade low-lying bridges in flood-prone areas to prevent tragedies like the Perodua Myvi which was swept away by strong currents over Kiansom river in Inanam from happening again.

“There are many low-lying bridges which are inundated with flood waters during heavy rain. “The PWD must upgrade bridges that are at risk of flooding to prevent vehicles and people from being washed away by flood waters,” said Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Inanam division chairman Datuk Yong Wui Chung.

He said the recent downpour in the west coast had caused flooding and landslides in multiple areas, resulting in massive damages to properties.

Yong stressed that clogged drains that hindered the discharge of water were the cause of the two major flash floods in September.

“The government must take measures to improve the drainage system and undertake deep cleaning of the drains to prevent the recurrence of flash floods.”
