Matunggong has potential to create rural tourism products
KUDAT: Matunggong has great potential to create rural tourism products.
Its assemblywoman, Datuk Julita Majungki, said among Matunggong’s advantages are its beautiful beaches and the rich culture of Rungus ethnic community which can be highlighted especially their skills in gong making, handicra s, weaving, embroidery and bead work.
She said this when launching the longhouse cleanliness and cheerfulness competition program at the Kampung Lajong longhouse here on Wednesday.
The month-long competition was participated by 26 villages under the longhouse cleanliness and cheerfulness category.
“This competition aims to give awareness to longhouse residents on the importance of cleanliness to the village environment.
“I hope this competition gives awareness to the villagers, especially those who live in longhouses so that they can see their potential to be involved in the rural tourism industry,” she said.
Julita, who is the Sabah Community Development and People’s Welfare Assistant Minister, also hopes that through this program, the villages involved can participate in the ‘Rural Tourism’ program.
Julita emphasizes four main things in the competition namely the cleanliness of the environment of the longhouse area, cheerfulness by prioritizing decorative features and the design of traditional Rungus ethnic motifs.
In addition, waste disposal and recycling are also emphasized.
“The things mentioned seem simple but this effort will not be successful if it is not accompanied by high commitment and desire,” she added.
Julita hopes this initiative will continue and get support from longhouse occupants until significant results can be seen.
She congratulated and thanked the Community Development Leaders Unit (UPPM) of Matunggong constituency for helping to make the program a success.
