Three caught for possessing cannabis

-

KOTA KINABALU: Three people, including two women, may face the death penalty when they were caught with over 2,500 grams of cannabis in two separate raids in the state capital on Monday.

Kota Kinabalu police chief ACP Mohd Zaidi Abdullah said both raids were carried out by narcotic police following investigation and surveillance on the suspects for several weeks.

“The first raid was carried out at Taman Suria Konbusak at around 7.30pm on Nov 22, where a 20-year-old woman was apprehended with several packets of cannabis weighing 1,711.40 grams.

“This then led police to KK Times Square where they seized 872.16 grams of cannabis from a couple in their 20s,” said Mohd Zaidi yesterday.

Police investigation revealed that the suspects obtained the drugs from Peninsular through courier and repacked into smaller quantities for distribution.

Mohd Zaidi said police also believed the suspects had been active since the Covid-19 pandemic to make easy money.

The arrests had led police to confiscate up to 2,583.56 grams of cannabis with street price of RM6,240, several items used to pack the drugs, cash RM1,353, handphones, laptop and other personal items.

Two of the suspects were also found to be drug users after their urine was tested positive of drug abuse, said Mohd Zaidi.

The suspects will be remanded for investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for drug trafficking, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction.

Police will also investigate the case under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, Section 15(1)(a) and Section 7 of the same act.
