Wee hails Tanjung Pelepas Port for hitting 10 million TEUs
KUALA LUMPUR: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong has applauded Tanjung Pelepas Port (PTP) for achieving today 10 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in container handling.
Wee said container handling at the port has exceeded the nine million TEUs target under Aspiration 2 of the Ministry of Transport’s (MOT) 100th Day Keluarga Malaysia Aspiration (AKM).
“Congratulations to PTP for this sterling performance! Today, PTP has successfully achieved 10 million TEUs in container handling as of 7am,” wrote Wee in his Facebook posting on Nov 23.
A TEU is a shipping container whose internal dimensions measure about 20 feet long, eight feet wide, and eight feet tall and is usually used to indicate the nominal capacity of container ships or container terminals and in statistics regarding container transit in ports.
PTP had handled 9.85 million TEUs last year.
“Now, even before Dec 31, 2021, PTP has successfully exceeded 10 million TEUs.
“This is PTP’s best achievement so far since its establishment,” he said.
The minister said the initiative was implemented to ensure container handling performance at the country’s main ports is at their optimum level in order to increase the country’s gross domestic product through the marine transportation sector.
“PTP has successfully recorded growth in its business and shown good performance in its management through its strategic planning when facing the challenges and impact of the Covid-19 pandemic.
“The determination and teamwork of all parties involved, including the Johor Port Authority (LPJ) and MOT’s maritime division, are now bearing fruit. Keep up the good work!” he added.
