26 defend national arm wrestling title

KOTA KINABALU: Twenty-six athletes carried Sabah’s defence of the National Arm Wrestling Championsh­ip overall title in Sunway Pyramid, Selangor.

The one-day event was held yesterday.

Sabah Arm Wrestling Associatio­n (SAWA) president Carfester Mokujin, prior to the team leaving for the championsh­ip recently, hoped the state squad would give their utmost best in their title defence.

He admitted the squad did not have the best of preparatio­n due to the Covid-19 restrictio­ns.

“The announceme­nt on the tournament was only made two months ago and the athletes were not able to train much earlier in preparatio­n for the championsh­ip.

“Neverthele­ss, I hope the state squad will go all out and show the will to win to in order to defend the overall champions title,” he said while reminding the state athletes to always

Carfester went on to express his hope that the coronaviru­s situation in the country would improve next year so that Sabah would be able to prepare better and SAWA able to organise tournament­s.

Jolly Johnson will act as captain-cum-coach of the 26member Sabah squad comprising profession­al arm-wrestlers and new faces.

SAWA deputy secretary Nesurey Petrus Lojuyo is the team manager.

Meanwhile, the state armwresler­s received further boost prior to leaving for the championsh­ip when Charena Sinidol of Penampang Ngiu Chap came forward to sponsor the squad t-shirts.

Carfester thanked Penampang Ngiu Chap as well as the various sponsors for helping the state team to be able to compete in the championsh­ip.

For the record, Sabah emerged as overall champions after collecting 61 points (10 golds, 12 silvers, seven bronzes) in the 2019 national championsh­ip.
