Tennis Malaysia proposes to bring beach, wheelchair tennis under its wings
KUALA LUMPUR: The Lawn Tennis Association of Malaysia (Tennis Malaysia) has proposed to amend its constitution to bring other tennis-related sports under its jurisdiction.
Tennis Malaysia’s newly appointed secretary Muhammad Shahrul Hafidz Ab Rahman said it includes wheelchair tennis, pickle ball, beach tennis and paddle tennis.
The proposal from the Negeri Sembilan Tennis Association (NSLTA) will be deliberated at its annual general meeting (AGM) next year.
“This amendment is to ensure that development of sports related to tennis is not left behind and is given attention in line with the changes in tennis at the international level,” he said when contacted by Bernama yesterday.
Meanwhile, Tennis Malaysia’s incumbent president Mirzan Mahathir retained his top post for another term (2022-2025) uncontested, in its AGM held last Saturday, the association announced in a statement.
A seven-cornered contest for three vice-presidents saw Datuk Seri Ahmad Farid Ridzuan, Datuk Patrick Liew Chin Joon and Zainudin Osman emerge victorious while 17 individuals contested for seven executive committee members posts.
Hang Kok Long was unanimously elected by the delegates as the treasurer.
The association also took forward steps to empower gender equality by electing Maria Fauzanna Ghazali and Rozana Mohd Mahfudz as their first two female Excos to assist in more active women participation in the sport.
“Tennis Malaysia will announce their three-year plan on Oct 8, when Sarawak Lawn Tennis Association (SLTA) hosts the 36th international Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Junior J1, Sarawak Premier Cup Championship,” the statement said.
