‘Help students with hearing disabilities to continue studies’

-

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) Kota Kinabalu division chief Datuk Seri Winston Liaw urges the government to look into providing opportunity to students with hearing disabilities to continue their education beyond Form Three.

Liaw lamented that in Sabah, these students have the facility to study only up to Form Three and they have to travel to Kuala Lumpur or Sarawak if they want to continue their secondary education.

Liaw said that he was informed there are about 100 students who are members of the Persatuan Sukan Orang Pekak Negeri Sabah who were unable to continue their education after completing Form Three.

“Most of them are from the B$ groups and their families are unable to afford to send them for further studies in Kuala Lumpur or Sarawak. If Sarawak can provide such an opportunity for this less fortunate group, why not Sabah?” he lamented.

Liaw said he intended to approach the principal of the existing school in Sabah that facilitates these students and find out a way on how to help them to get their higher education.

He said this after presenting a sponsorship for 15 athletes from the Persatuan Sukan Orang Pekak Negeri Sabah to join the International Charity Run in Kuala Lumpur on October 2.

Liaw added that he had discussed with the association’s president, Spencer Soo, about the possibility of organising some friendly sporting events together.

“I also urge employers in Sabah to hire the students after they left school so that they can earn a living and know that the public cares for them,” he said.
