382 take part in Childhood Cancer Awareness 5km Walkathon
KOTA KINABALU: A total of 382 participants completed the Childhood Cancer Awareness 5km Walkathon in conjunction with Childhood Cancer Awareness Month which is celebrated in September every year.
The programme was jointly organised by the Sabah Women and Children’s Hospital (HWKKS), Universiti Malaysia Sabah Hospital (HUMS) and the Sabah Children’s Cancer Association.
The opening ceremony was completed by the Deputy ViceChancellor of Student and Alumni Affairs of UMS, Associate Professor Dr Raman Noordin.
Dr Raman, who is currently holding the function of UMS Vice Chancellor, said cancer patients and cancer survivors also took part in the programme.
“Personally, I am very impressed with your enthusiasm and involvement and we all should support this group. I have great hope that such efforts can improve the quality of life of the community along with the improvement of a healthy lifestyle and awareness of healthcare,” he said.
Apart from that, the programme was aimed to increase the public awareness on cancer suffered by children as well as generate funds to be channeled to the Sabah Children’s Cancer Association. Also participating in the programme were UMS Registrar, Luqman Ridha Anwar, director of HUMS, Professor Dr Helen Lasimbang and the president of Teluk Likas Rotary Club who is also a HWKKS Child Cancer Specialist, Dr Asohan Thevarajah, members of the HUMS Welfare and Recreation Club, Kiwanis Club of Sabah, UMS Rotaract Club, Kota Kinabalu Rotary Club and programme sponsors.
