Chess a game of science and art
KOTA KINABALU: Chess is not only a game of mind but also a game of science and art.
Sabah Chess Association (SCA) president Muammar Julkarnain said from an international standard, the game of chess is both a science and an art.
“Chess is a game of science as everything is there, every move is calculative, theories, and systematic from the opening move right up to the endgame.
“Chess is also an art because players will sacrifice a piece or pieces and will place their pieces in strategic locations that will lead to check or checkmate.
“That’s the beauty of chess and this game is now played by young people,” he said at the closing ceremony of the Borneo Chess Championship 2022 (open and junior) that was held at University College Sabah Foundation (UCSF) from Nov 26 to 27.
Muammar said Sabah Chess Association (SCA) had initially planned to organise the Borneo
Chess Festival back in 2020 but was forced to postpone it to 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Following the endemic phase in April 2022, SCA took the opportunity to organise the Borneo Chess Festival 2022, which is divided into three categories, namely the National State Chess Championship from Nov 21-24, and the Borneo Chess Championship for Person With Disabilities on Nov 24. Both tournaments were held at
Avangio Hotel.
The third tournament was the Borneo Chess Championship 2022 (open and junior) held at UCSF from Nov 26 to 27.
Meanwhile, UCSF ViceChancellor Dr Rafiq Idris said as a chess player himself, he hopes more chess competitions and tournaments will be held in the state in the future.
He also thanked SCA for choosing UCSF to host their tournament and look forward to more cooperation in the future.
