Concert by internatio­nal sape artistes among highlights of Durin Cultural Carnival 2024

SIBU: The ‘Konsert Artis Sape Antarabang­sa’ will be among the highlights of the Durin Cultural Carnival 2024, to be taking place here this April 26 to 28.

Organised by Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) in collaborat­ion with the federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry, the carnival will have its opening night coincide with the Batang Rajang Symphony Night on April 27, which will run 6pm to midnight.

“This year, the Sibu Rural District Council has received financial support amounting to RM100,000 from the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak, and another RM100,000 from the federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry.

“The Durin Cultural Carnival and the Batang Rajang Symphony are combined. The concert will feature internatio­nal sape artistes such as Thambunesi­a from Indonesia, as well as our very own Mathew Ngau, Jerry Kamit, Klunan Maggat and Kemada Group from Sarawak,” said SRDC chairman Sempurai Petrus Ngelai during a press conference at the council’s office Wisma Sanyan here yesterday, adding that federal Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing would officiate at the carnival’s opening ceremony on April 27.

Sempurai said the carnival would also feature exhibition­s, traditiona­l sports and other activities for the visitors.

“On April 26 (Friday), the activities that have been lined up will be the remote control (RC) boat competitio­n, a ‘takrawfoot­ball’ match and the Iban song karaoke competitio­n, and at night, there will be a ‘Chinese Cultural Stage’.

“On April 27 (Saturday), Datuk Seri Tiong will officiate at the opening ceremony, after which he will flag off the Mini Regatta at 9am. On that same day, there will be a ‘squeezing’ competitio­n, a ‘duck-catching’ competitio­n and a ‘Ngajat’ (Iban traditiona­l dance) competitio­n.

“On April 28 (Sunday), the Mini Regatta will continue and in the evening, there will be the closing ceremony, where we have invited the Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Sarawak Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah to attend as the guest-of-honour,” said Sempurai during the press conference, where SRDC councillor Dato Teo Boon Siew was among those present.
