In 1969, in the small town of Tamparuli, I witnessed my mother’s unwavering determination as she struggled to endure the challenges of working as a laundry cleaner for two households. This was a time when washing clothes demanded strenuous manual labor, leaving an indelible mark on my heart.
After completing her daytime laundry duties, she would settle into her usual chair, ready to hand-roll charut or cigars for my father to sell. He, too, faced his own set of challenges, particularly during the fasting month when the sales of cigars would drastically decline.
The sight of my mother’s hands, marked by blisters caused by harsh washing powders and worsened by the constant rolling of cigars, eloquently portrays the sacrifices she endured for our welfare. It’s a testament to her strength and resilience in the face of challenging circumstances, reminding us of the importance of valuing the labor and sacrifices of those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to support their families.
Our parents, some of whom were illiterate, imparted invaluable lessons in resilience, determination, and love through their hardships. As custodians of these lessons, it becomes our responsibility to embody these virtues in our daily lives. Acts of kindness, empathy, and generosity become a means of honoring the silent sacrifices made by our parents.
