KUCHING: A chainsawtoting mentally unsound man caused a stir at a residential area in Stapok here yesterday morning by throwing rocks at houses before eventually being apprehended by police.

The heavily- tattoed local man, who did not possess any identification documents, showed up at the residential area around 9am carrying an electric chainsaw, which had not been turned on, and started throwing small rocks at several houses.

Worried residents immediately called the police who rushed to the scene to confront the man, only to be told by him that it was merely a ‘ family’ problem as every house owner in the area was either his brother or sister.

When ordered to surrender, the man became aggressive and scuff led with policemen and had to be physically restrained by five patrolmen before being placed under arrest.

He was first taken to the Sarawak General Hospital to treat minor cuts sustained during the scuffle and was later sent to Sentosa hospital for a mental evaluation.

In a separate incident, a 47year- old man was admitted to the Sarawak General Hospital with a suspected skull fracture after he was found unconscious in a rented shop house room on Thursday.

The victim was found around 6pm by a co-worker, who stays next door, after the latter noticed the former had not emerged from his room and also failed to show up for work.

The co-worker first knocked on the door before deciding to force it open when he failed to get a response, and immediately summoned for an ambulance when he saw the unconscious victim lying in bed. A police report has been lodged.

In another unrelated matter, an elderly Indonesian-born man drowned after he was believed to have fallen into a stream near his house in Matang yesterday afternoon.

The deceased, identified as 74-year- old Liew Fah Tong, was discovered around 5pm in the stream behind his house in Sungai Cina by his elder sister after she went looking for him.

The body was later sent to the Sarawak General Hospital for a post mortem procedure.

According to the sister, Liew was a bachelor who moved here after being adopted by a local family 50 years ago.
