KUCHING: A new Malaysian record was created on Thursday night when more than 10,000 people tossed ‘yee sang’ simultaneously at the Chap Goh Mei celebration at MJC Batu Kawa New Township here.

Joining the crowd in creating the new record were Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife, Datin Seri Paduka Rosmah Mansor, Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and his wife, Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib, SUPP president Datuk Seri Peter Chin and other party leaders as well as the state cabinet ministers.

The current record in the Malaysia Book of Records is 4,500 people tossing ‘yee sang’ at the same time. The exact number of people who participated in creating the new record will be confirmed by the Malaysia Book of Records later.

Titled ‘A date with Najib’, the 1,000-table dinner was organised by SUPP. Although the dinner only started at 6.30pm, invited guests started thronging the car park where the event took place as early as 5.30pm.

The diners, including members of the 198 Chinese related associations and nongovernmental organisations, were entertained with cultural and singing performances while waiting for the arrival of Najib.

They were also served three dishes prior to the arrival of Najib and his entourage.

Shortly after Najib arrived at the venue at around 8pm, thousands of people joined in to toss ‘ yee sang’ simultaneously to rewrite history. Dinner commenced after the speeches delivered by Chin, Taib and Najib.

Apart from entertainment and food, the organiser also surprised the diners with a lucky draw.
