Fourth quarter of 2012 electoral roll gazetted

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has gazetted the fourth quarter of the 2012 electoral roll yesterday, containing 294,392 names comprising 243,204 new electors and 51,188 voters who had changed their polling centres.

According to a statement issued by EC public relations officer Sabri Said, this was in accordance with Regulations 21A & 22(1) of the Elections ( Registration of Electors) Regulations 2002 which states that a supplementary electoral roll be validated before it is used for election matters.

However, this gazette is for application for new registration or change in polling centres not involved in any objection, he said.

For applications whose names were objected, he said the EC will postpone the validation until public investigations are completed.

During the display period of the supplementary electoral roll from Jan 17 to 30, the EC received 630 objections involving 19 parliamentary election divisions and they have all not been resolved.

“The number of registered voters nationwide after combining with the fourth quarter electoral roll and the 2011 Master Electroral Roll is 13,291,385 people,” he said.

“It is now February and the Dewan Rakyat will be dissolved latest by April 30. This means the latest that the EC will announce the election is within two months, maybe until the end of June or July ( polling day),” he told reporters after briefing and presenting credentials to election managers for Perlis, Kedah and Penang, here yesterday.

Regarding election observers from abroad for the 13th general election, he said the EC had yet to receive any names but expected observers from Asean countries to take part.

Meanwhile, on rumours that many foreign exhibitors for the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition ( LIMA 2013) will withdraw themselves if the Dewan Rakyat is dissolved before the event, Abdul Aziz said he personally felt it would not be a problem to hold LIMA 2013 before the general election.

“LIMA 2013 will be held for five days from March 26 to 30 and the plan was made two years ago. The Dewan Rakyat still has until April 30,” he said.

Abdul Aziz said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has held the post of Defence Minister and was aware of the importance of foreign investment in LIMA 2013.

“The prime mMinister is used to LIMA and he would also advise the Yang di-Pertuan Agong on when to dissolve the Dewan Rakyat. To me it is very unlikely for LIMA to coincide with the election,” he said.

He added that so far the EC had not discussed LIMA 2013 in preparing for the coming election. — Bernama
