Voting the right of Malaysians everywhere
BANGKOK: Malaysians residing in Thailand have been advised to exercise their rights as voters for the coming 13th general election.
Malaysian Ambassador to Thailand, Datuk Nazirah Hussain said voting is a right for eligible Malaysians regardless of where they are.
When met at the embassy’s dinner function with Malaysians in Thailand recently, she said the mission has informed Malaysians registered with the embassy on the way to vote in the election.
According to Nazirah, the Election Commission ( EC) has also prepared information on postal voting for Malaysians living abroad.
“Information and regulations for postal voting can be found on the EC website at www. spr.gov. my.
“The embassy has also informed our people here to obey all the regulations,” said Nazirah who has served as ambassador in Thailand for two years.
The envoy also suggested that Malaysians living in the country return home if needed to exercise their rights as voters.
The media has reported that until Feb 18, the EC recorded 2,636 Malaysians in 108 countries have registered for the postal voting facility.
Touching on Malaysia and Thailand’s diplomatic relations, Nazirah said the long solid political, economic and social ties between the two countries were still strong.
She said the amicable relationship was a result of understanding between Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra. — Bernama
