KUALA LUMPUR: Year on year ( y- o-y) sales volume of passenger and commercial vehicles last month rose 34.5 per cent to 55,066 units as consumer sentiment continued to be positive, the Malaysian Automotive Association ( MAA) said.

“There are continued aggressive promotional campaigns by car companies and spillover of the December deliveries,” MAA said in a statement.

Annual vehicle production for January 2013 increased nine per cent to 56,232 units from 51,394 units.

It said the passenger vehicle segment recorded higher sales of 48,720 units from 36,864 units last year while the commercial vehicle segment posted increased sales of 6,346 units from 4,084 units last year. It said production for January also rose to 56,232 units from 51,394 units in the same month last year with 50,567 units of passenger vehicles produced visa-vis 46,265 units the same month last year.

It added 5,665 units of commercial vehicles were also produced in the month compared with 5,129 units in January 2012.

MAA said market performance in January was positively affected by continued aggressive promotional campaigns by car companies coupled with spill over from the December delivery.

Sales volume for February was expected to be lower than in January due to the seasonal shortworking month because of the Chinese New Year festive holidays and company closures, said MAA.
