EC detects two bogus observers in Kelantan on nomination day

-

PUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission ( EC) detected two people who posed as election observers at a nomination centre in Kelantan last Saturday, EC deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar revealed yesterday.

He said they were spotted by election workers who found that they had fake passes and they were handed over to the police.

They were later released on police bail, he told a news conference here.

“EC officers know who the appointed observers are. They will be using the special pass issued by the EC and have a special attire. Their profiles can be seen on the EC website,” he said.

Wan Ahmad reminded all observers to maintain their neutral stand and not to get involved in the political campaign.

The EC has appointed 1,176 independent observers from 17 NGOs, five of them in the peninsula, nine in Sarawak and three in Sabah.

Selangor has the most number of observers, at 174, followed by Sabah (135), Perak (129), Kelantan (122), Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur ( 94), Sarawak ( 93) and Johor ( 83).

On foreign observers from the Asean secretariat, Cambodia, Indonesia, Myanmar and the Philippines, Wan Ahmad said they were expected to reply this week.

“There were requests to sent more observers but the EC has set a limit on seven from each country (and the Asean secretariat),” he said. — Bernama
