Improvement to wet section of Sibu Central Market done

-

SIBU: The perennial wet and slippery surface at the wet section of Sibu Central Market is now a thing of the past, thanks to the upgrading work being done there which was completed a month ahead of schedule.

Sibu Central Market Hawker’s Association chairman Yiing Chung Ming told reporters that excess water could now be easily drained away.

“It makes it more conducive and convenient for one to shop at the wet market. But more importantly, safety is strengthened to prevent shoppers, the elderly in particular, from slipping due to the water-logged surface,” Yiing explained.

He pointed out the newly renovated marketplace would make it more presentable to visitors and tourists alike.

“The walkway is now wider thus improving the traffic flow as shoppers can move about more freely, without having to rub shoulders,” he said when asked on the response of traders towards the renovated facility.

Another trader, surnamed Ting, too gave the thumbs-up to the upgraded wet market.

“The surface is kept dry unlike before the renovation when the walkway was always wet and slippery.”

The 143 stalls started trading at the upgraded wet market at the end of last month.

Earlier, 119 stalls were temporarily put up at the open space at the central market, while another 24, including 21 ‘ taufu’ and three live poultry stalls, were relocated to the back portion of Khoo Peng Loong Road.

The upgrading project cost RM1 million.
