LDP has done ‘fairly well’in 13th general election — Liew

KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party ( LDP) president Datuk V. K. Liew has described the performance of the party in the 13th General Election ( GE13) as fairly well, by retaining all three of the allocated state seats.

He said the victory was achieved through incumbent Datuk Teo Chee Kang in Tanjung Kapur, Datuk Pang Yuk Ming ( Kalabakan) and Charlie Pang Su Pin, who contested for the first time for the Karamunting state seat.

“LDP has done fairly well. Unfortunately, we lost Likas (in Kota Kinabalu), a new seat allocated to us, but our Youth chief, Chin Shu Yin, did not do too badly, considering the fact that he came second in a three- cornered fight involving veteran politician- cum- Sabah Progressive Party ( SAPP) president Datuk Yong Teck Lee.

“As for me, I am unable to fend off the wave from the opposition in a closely- contested one to one fight in the Sandakan parliamentary, with a turn out of 75.30 per cent or 27,889 voters out of 37,065 voters, the majority being Chinese here,” he said in a statement here yesterday.

Liew said out of the 27,889 voters who turned out, 13,377 voted in his favour, an increase of more than 5,000 votes from his first outing in 2008.

He said the result showed that the Sandakan voters were split in the middle in this twocornered fight.

“It is not a total one- sided battle. The young generation or new first- time voters have also contributed to the outcome.

“Regardless of the results, the fact remains that the people have spoken. The GE13 shows that the process of democracy has set its tone firmly in our country. The Opposition must accept the election results with grace, like what we in BN, would do,” he said. — Bernama
