New Melaka CM scheduled to be sworn in today

MELAKA: The new chief minister of Melaka who will be replacing Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam is scheduled to be sworn in at the Office of the Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri in Seri Negeri, Ayer Keroh here this morning.

A spokesman from the Chief Minister’s Office said the swearing in would be held before Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri, Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob.

The Barisan Nasional (BN) was returned the mandate to govern Melaka in on Sunday’s 13th General Election (GE13) with more than a two thirds majority, winning 21 of the 28 seats at stake.

It is highly speculated that Sungai Udang assemblyma­n Datuk Idris Haron, 46, who contested the seat after serving two terms as member of parliament, is likely to to be given the job.

The Tangga Batu Umno chief defeated Asri Buang of PKR on Sunday by a majority of 9,131 votes. He obtained 12,145 votes while Asri 3,009.

Another name mentioned for the CM post is former state executive councillor and Alor Gajah Umno chief Datuk Abdul Ghafaar Atan, 56, who defeated his challenger, Wong Chee Chew of PAS, by a majority of 3,857 votes. — Bernama
