Joy for S. Africa, NZ at Glasgow Sevens
LONDON: South Africa claimed their third Cup victory of the 2012- 13 Sevens World Ser ies after beating New Zealand 28-21 in the final of the penultimate event in Glasgow on Sunday.
It was nonetheless a day to remember for New Zealand, who had already secured an 11th World Series title by reaching the Cup semi- finals with victory over Argentina.
Their success over the South Americans was enough to give them an unassailable lead in the standings.
England, who host the final leg of the series next week, fell to South Africa in the last four, but took third place after Sam Edgerley came off the bench to secure a lastgasp 24-21 victory over Wales.
The United States, Australia and France also lifted silverware at Scotstoun Stadium.
The USA won the Plate, which they had also won in Tokyo, after Nick Edwards scored his eighth try of the tournament in a 17- 7 success against Argentina.
Australia took the Bowl with a 12- 5 success against Kenya in the final, which ensured that Michael O’Connor’s side finished the second day with a 100 percent record.
The Australians had beaten Portugal 36- 0 in the quarter-finals and then overcame Samoa 17-12 in the last four, with Cameron Clark scoring his 10th World Series try.
France fell 22-7 to Kenya in the Bowl quarter-finals but bounced back to beat Sevens World Cup hosts Russia 21-12 in the Shield final.
Russia had put p a id to Portugal in the semi- finals, with Igor Galinovskiy scoring two of their seven tries, after a hat- trick by Paul Albaladejo had helped them defeat Spain. — AFP
