Toastmasters hold Gala and Award Nite
SIBU: The Toastmasters International of District 87 that comprises the regions of East Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia held its Gala and Award Nite at a leading hotel here on Saturday evening at the conclusion of a two-day 3rd Annual Convention.
Themed ‘Growing deeper, reaching further’, Toastmasters International District 87 Governor and function advisor Richard Gontusan disclosed that it promotes oratory skills in public communications and leadership training.
He added that anyone who is 18 years and above is eligible to be a member irrespective of race or religion while the languages spoken are Bahasa Malaysia, English and Mandarin.
Toastmasters International District 87 has 142 clubs and over 2,000 members.
It organises for members conventions, speech contests, education workshops and meetings.
He said the organisation is the leading movement devoted to making oral communication on worldwide realities.
Toastmasters help men and women acquire the art of speaking, listening and thinking to promote self-actualisation, enhance leadership potential, foster human understanding and contribute to the betterment of mankind.
Toastmasters International continually expands its worldwide network of member clubs thereby offering more people the opportunity to benefit from its programmes.
In so doing, it empowers people to achieve their full potential and realise their dreams.
The core values of Toastmasters International are integrity, dedication to excellence, service to members and respect for individuals, he added.
The evening function saw numerous awards in its Convention’s Hall of Fame: First Club to Achieve President’s Distinguished Club Status 20122013 went to Miri Toastmasters Club under president Jennifer Hii Ai Mee, The Achiever of President’s Distinguished Area Status 2012-2013 to Area E3, Division E under Area Governor Mohd Hishan Khairul, and First Division to Achieve President’s Distinguished Division Status 2012-2013 to Division E under Division Governor Lau Pick Tai.
Other honours were for the president’s Distinguished Clubs Division D, Division E, Division H, Division I, Division J, and Division K that added up to 22 recognitions.
Six awards were for Distinguished District Toastmasters, among them KartasasmitaLina of Kebayoran Club, Sebastian Anthony of Azam TMC, Vu Wey Tyng of IEM Sabah, Puk Li Li of Miri Club, Ivy We Nee of Inti TMC and Jasmine Leong of Kota Kinabalu.
Toastmasters International president Dr John Lau and immediate past president Michael Notario were among those present.
